Pascal Wehrlein surprised with Singapore pace

Pascal Wehrlein has admitted that he was surprised to keep Marcus Ericsson behind him in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Ericsson qualified in 16th while Wehrlein started from a lowly 20th place. However, after Ericsson's early pit gamble failed to work as intended, Wehlein was able to take 16th and keep the Sauber driver one spot behind.

"This was definitely the toughest race of the season," said Wehrlein. "I was pushing hard from start to finish, but particularly from the mid-point of the race to make sure we kept Ericsson behind."

"Given our performance through the rest of the weekend, it was unexpected that we would have the pace to do that" he added. "I was also on the ultrasoft for 26 laps in the final stint. I had to make that work, and I did, so again, I’m very happy with that."
