Fernando Alonso was left a further three-tenths behind after lapping his Ferrari in 1m 39.160s to supplant Jenson Button's 1m 39.219s for McLaren. It was another curious session, where the track seemed to get slower as it progressed. Michael Schumacher gave Mercedes a boost with the fifth-fastest time of 1m 39.330s to beat Ferraris Felipe Massa, who had been fastest initially and then managed 1m 39.422s.
Nico Rosberg upstaged 2013 team mate Lewis Hamilton, taking his Mercedes round in 1m 39.584s to the McLaren drivers 1m 39.717s. Behind them, Nico Hulkenberg did well to lap his Force India in 1m 39.739s after missing the morning session.
Lotus continued to evaluate their latest aerodynamic upgrade which includes the Coanda-effect exhausts, and will make a decision tonight whether to continue with it for the rest of the weekend. Kimi Raikkonen was 10th on 1m 39.839s and Romain Grosjean 11th on 1m 39.957s.
Williams' Bruno Senna got going for his first session of the day, taking 12th place in 1m 40.089s despite a spin ahead of Paul di Restas Force India on 1m 40.112s. Kamui Kobayashi was once again Saubers lead driver with 1m 40.445s, but after several offs this morning Sergio Perezs bad day continued when his C31 lost power with an actuator problem out on the circuit after hed worked down to 1m 40.745s. It was recovered subsequently, but he was unable to resume running.
Jean-Eric Vergne was Toro Rosso's leader this time with 1m 40.789s ahead of team mate Daniel Ricciardos 1m 40.997s, while an off was just one of Pastor Maldonado's problems as he could only manage 18th fastest on 1m 41.200s in the second Williams.
Heikki Kovalainen continued to head the new teams, with 1m 41.602s for Caterham, opening the gap to Marussia as Timo Glock managed 1m 42.596s and his team mate Charles Pic 1m 43.066s. Vitaly Petrov reclaimed the cockpit of his CT-01 for 1m 43.067s. Having level pegged exactly for some time, the HRTs were separated when Narain Karthikeyan, who had missed the morning session, found pace for 1m 43.869s to Pedro de la Rosas 1m 44.533s.
