Antonio Giovinazzi on pole in Baku

GP2 rookie Antonio Giovinazzi has claimed pole position for the series' first visit to Azerbaijan.

The Italian, who also competed in the opening round of the European Le Mans Series earlier this year, led for much of the session, fighting off strong times from the ART pairing of Sergey Sirotkin and Nobuharu Matsushita, who eventually settled for second and third respectively.

Raffaele Marciello and Luca Ghiotto were fourth and fifth to make it three Italian drivers in the top five.

Oliver Rowland, Marvin Kirchhofer Pierre Gasly, Norman Nato, and Sergio Canamasas round out the top ten in a session which was halted mid-way through due Philo Paz Armand being stranded down the escape road at turn three.
