Williams Defends McLaren: “Racing Is a Crazy Business”

Former Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams has defended McLaren amid claims that the team is favouring Lando Norris over Oscar Piastri. According to Williams, the idea that McLaren is deliberately steering results is unrealistic and ignores how chaotic and fast-moving Formula 1 truly is.

The discussion resurfaced after several weekends in which Norris appeared to have the upper hand in both pace and race strategy. Some fans suggested that McLaren was prioritising Norris because of his championship position. But within the paddock, many believe Piastri is simply still developing and that the team has treated both drivers fairly.

Williams says that from her experience leading an F1 team, such accusations underestimate how unpredictable the sport is behind the scenes.

“People Forget How Complex It All Is”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Williams explained why she rejects the theory. “Fans see a snapshot of what happens on track, but they do not see the hundred decisions made before that. Racing is a crazy business. Things happen fast, circumstances change, and sometimes one driver benefits simply because the moment plays out that way.”

She stressed that no competitive team would deliberately disadvantage one of its own drivers. “You want both cars scoring points, especially in a championship fight. No one is sabotaging Oscar. That is not how Formula 1 works.”

Piastri Still Learning, Norris in a Peak Moment

Williams praised Piastri’s maturity and speed but acknowledged that experience still plays a role. “Oscar is brilliant. He is exceptionally talented for his age. But Lando has been in the sport longer and is going through a period where everything he touches turns to gold. That difference naturally shows.”

She added that internal dynamics often fluctuate throughout a season. “One driver can be on top for weeks, then the other finds something and the balance shifts. It is a living process, not a fixed hierarchy.”

A Vote of Confidence in McLaren

Williams also defended McLaren’s leadership. “Andrea Stella and Zak Brown run a very strong, very transparent organisation. They know how important it is to treat both drivers equally. They are not the type of team to play favourites.”

She believes the pairing of Norris and Piastri is one of the most exciting on the grid. “They push each other in a positive way. That is exactly what you want when building a team capable of winning championships.”

With the title battle reaching its final phase, Williams says it is important to avoid reading too much into isolated moments. “From the outside everything looks simple. On the inside it is anything but. McLaren is doing a fantastic job managing two top drivers.”
