Max Verstappen heads into the Las Vegas Grand Prix knowing he cannot afford a setback. The Dutchman sits 49 points behind championship leader Lando Norris, and with only three races to go, every session and every decision carries enormous weight. If Verstappen wants to keep the title fight alive until Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas is the place where he must strike.
Red Bull has struggled in recent weekends, losing ground to McLaren in both one-lap pace and tyre management. Verstappen has limited the damage with strong recovery drives, but the margin for error is now gone. McLaren expects to be strong on the Strip, and Ferrari is also confident on the low-downforce layout.
The challenge for Verstappen is clear: he must finish ahead of Norris, and ideally ahead of Oscar Piastri as well, to avoid seeing the championship slip out of reach.
A Crucial Weekend for Red Bull
Las Vegas offers both opportunity and risk. The track suits Red Bull in theory, with long straights and heavy-braking zones, but setup windows have been unpredictable this season. “Max needs the team to be perfect,” Sky Sports analyst Karun Chandhok said earlier this week. “If Red Bull misses the setup again, McLaren will run away.”
There is also pressure on Liam Lawson. Red Bull needs strong data from both cars to make fast setup decisions, something the team has struggled with in recent races. Verstappen cannot carry the full load alone, especially in a weekend where tyre warm-up, surface temperature and slipstreaming play such a big role.
What Verstappen Must Achieve This Weekend
The equation is simple. If Verstappen finishes behind Norris again, the gap could widen to a point where only a mathematical chance remains. A win would cut the deficit dramatically and put pressure back on McLaren heading into Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Even a top-two finish could be enough if Norris struggles, but the Dutchman cannot leave Las Vegas with another third place while McLaren takes maximum points. Every result now shifts the balance of power.
Verstappen Remains Defiant
Despite the pressure, Verstappen has not given up. He says he feels strong heading into the weekend. “We need to maximise everything,” he said. “I know what we have to do. The fight is still open.”
The Red Bull star has delivered big performances under pressure before, and Las Vegas could be another of those nights. Whether he leaves the Strip with renewed hope or fading dreams will likely define the rest of the season.
