Fernando Alonso will drive a 2018 spec-IndyCar next week in a private test, McLaren has confirmed. Alonso announced mid-way through August that he would be leaving Formula 1 at the end of the year after spending 17 years in the series.
The Spaniard is working with McLaren to secure an entry in IndyCar for 2019. The 37-year-old got his first taste of the series last year when he skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to take part in the Indianapolis 500 race.

Alonso will test at an event closed off to the media and public, with no other information revealed. It had previously been believed that he would drive at Barber Motorsports Park, as it does not appear on the remaining race schedule for the 2018 IndyCar season.
Andretti Autosport has been linked with a takeover of Harding Racing, who is suffering from financial issues. It is believed that Alonso's IndyCar entry would be in partnership with Andretti, the team he raced the Indy 500 with.
However, Andretti runs with Honda engines, and McLaren is understood to be keen on securing an engine deal with rivals Chevrolet. Honda has previously stated that it would like to work with Alonso again going forward, following their three-year campaign with McLaren in F1.
