McLaren working on IndyCar switch for Alonso

McLaren is working on a full-time IndyCar drive for Fernando Alonso, who announced his departure from Formula 1 on Tuesday. The 37-year-old will see out the year with McLaren in F1, before taking on a new challenge in 2019.

Alonso has been linked to an IndyCar drive for many months, as he hopes to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The Spaniard made his debut in the series last year, when he skipped the Monaco Grand Prix in order to take part in the Indianapolis 500 race.

It is likely that Alonso will be making a full-time move to the American series next year, and McLaren wants to be right there with him: "The announcement certainly has fueled excitement among INDYCAR fans who hope that Alonso will compete throughout the championship in 2019,” IndyCar chief Mark Miles said.

However, nothing will be finalised anytime soon: “McLaren is working to put all the necessary arrangements in place, and we are supporting their efforts. I don’t expect this to be resolved until closer to the end of this year.”

Alonso has spent 17 years in F1, having won two world championships. However, recent years has seen him compete lower down the field with less competitive cars, which has no doubt influenced his decision to quit the sport.
