The FIA has enforced a new rule regarding cutting the first corner at the Circuit de Catalunya. Before the weekend got underway, a bollard was placed at the Turn 3, with drivers told to re-join the track by passing around it if they ran off the circuit at Turn 1.
During running on Saturday, Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sauber's Marcus Ericsson did not acknowledge the bollard after they went off the circuit. However, they avoided penalties, as the teams noted that they had weaved around the kerbs that are in place, instead of driving over them.
The FIA has now changed the rule, stating that the drivers must go around the Turn 3 bollard if the weave through the kerbs, as well as driving over them. With Turn 1 being notoriously tight on lap 1, it is likely to see at least one driver take the option of going off track to avoid contact.
