Alonso hoping to receive competitive engine "gift" in 2018

Fernando Alonso has hinted that he could be staying at McLaren in 2018, providing he gets assurance that the team will have a competitive engine. Alonso has been frustrated since re-joining McLaren in 2015, as its engine partnership with Honda has hit rough patches.

The Japanese manufacturer has failed to provide McLaren with fast and competitive engines leaving some to believe that Alonso is set to quit the sport at the end of the season. However, he says that he would like a competitive engine to come with the package in 2018.

"I'm very proud of the team and we have worked well for the last three years," he declared. "Hopefully we will see each other next year as well if Eric (Boullier), Zak (Brown) or someone else sends me a nice gift. I think here we are fighting for seventh place, but it's not the position dreamed about by any driver. There are other things going on that are not about seventh position for next year, when I hope we are fighting instead for pole."
