Mercedes need to know if McLaren want an engine "after the summer break"

Amid the current struggles between McLaren and Honda, Mercedes has been rumoured to be in contention with supplying McLaren with engines for 2018. Mercedes provided the Woking team with engines from 1995 to 2014, before McLaren decided to reunite with Honda.

Toto Wolff, the boss at the Mercedes F1 team, has not confirmed that a deal is happening but says that if there is any potential for an agreement to take place, they must know sometime around when the summer break concludes at the end of August.

"We would have to know something after the summer break," he said at Baku. "McLaren probably needs to know earlier than we do, but I say again -- we do not interfere in the relationship between Honda and McLaren.

"We will not be a reason for any divorce. Only if McLaren is at the point where they need an engine will we listen. We do not grab a partner away from another manufacturer," Wolff insisted.

Alonso took further time in Azerbaijan to slam Honda stating that they are so slow in a straight line, other competitors think that they are on a slow lap: "I think our opponents are even a bit confused about our speed," he said. "We are so slow that they probably think we are going into the pits when we are actually starting a flying lap. I'm sorry, but it's true."
