Ricciardo: "Renault engine upgrades are in Baku"

Daniel Ricciardo has confirmed that Red Bull's engine supplier Renault has indeed brought new upgrades to this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.

The Australian's revelation contradicts comments previously made by Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul, who had said that no major upgrades would be introduced until next year. Following on from this, Ricciardo explained: "It's not the upgrade that has been talked about, but it should help us. And we'll take whatever we can get." He elaborated on this apparent optimism, which comes despite recent exasperation within Red Bull, by adding that "it's not as bad as it might seem from the outside.

"Of course, we would welcome a big upgrade - it would be fantastic to get a second a lap - but it is clear that this is unlikely to happen. But until the last race in Abu Dhabi, we will get various upgrades."

Despite this, however, it is already known that Renault is keen to focus on preparing for 2018, and Renault works racer Nico Hulkenberg has acknowledged that there is a lot for the company to do if it is to be competitive: "The gap to the top is significant and we need a lot of performance," he said.
