Stoffel Vandoorne has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the Monaco Grand Prix after the Belgian was deemed guilty of causing a collision on lap 34 of the Spanish Grand Prix. Vandoorne was alongside Felipe Massa heading into turn one but aggressively turned in on the Brazilian, which left Vandoorne in the gravel.

While Massa was able to continue without any major problems, Vandoorne was out and visibly disappointed. The Belgian has so far been heavily outclassed by teammate Fernando Alonso, who managed to climb to seventh in yesterday's qualifying session.

"Not an easy weekend for us as a team, but we brought a lot of parts and it seems like we have made a step forward," he said. "Onto the next weekend in Monaco, it should be a better weekend for us and I'll try to do a better job next time."

McLaren are looking at Monaco as their best opportunity of the year to grab some points, but that task has been made just a little bit more difficult with an applied penalty. Jenson Button will of course be returning to replace Fernando Alonso for Formula 1's most glamourous race in two weeks time.

  • Fair, surprising from vandoorne, he is definitely better than that

    • It was, and he certainly was at fault here. Im inclined to (for once) agree with the Sky pundits: he probably misjudged Massa's speed.
