Sauber continue to use 2016-spec Ferrari engines next year
Auto Motor und Sport broke the news on Friday, and comes despite the team no longer being in financial difficulty after their takeover earlier this year.
"Sauber's engine choice makes sense," said Auto Motor und Sport Michael Schmidt. "The dimensions of the engine are all known to the engineers, and there are rumours the Swiss team could become the first Honda customer from 2018."
However, Sauber won't be as behind engine-wise as the recent revelation makes it seem.
The Swiss team currently run the Ferrari engine from the start of the year, whereas next year they will be running what the factory team introduced at Monza last month.

I think this might be a mistake. While dimensions and such are known and will help chassis design, their engines will be inferior in most other ways (hopefully) compared to the 2017 specs, and if Sauber want even a few points they'll need all the oompf they can get.
