Cosworth to make Formula 1 return in 2015

F1Today.net has received information from a highly creditable source stating that the legendary Engine manufacturer Cosworth are in the process of developing an engine for Formula 1 in 2015.

The engine, officially known as a Power Unit will be of the same 1.6l Turbocharged V6 configuration that is now mandatory due to the new regulations that have come into place for 2014.

After the change, Cosworth decided to exit Formula 1 at the end of last season due to them not wishing to manufacture a brand new engine with a potential lack of customers, thanks to the only team who ran the Cosworth machinery, Marussia changing to Ferrari power for 2014.

Cosworth’s name has been symbolic with Motorsport since the 1960’s, featuring in the American IndyCar and Champ Car Championships, but the is most recognisable within the Formula 1 paddock, with teams such as March, Tyrrell, Lotus, Brabham, Williams and McLaren using the Ford-developed DFV 3.0 V8.

Their dominance came in 1974, with all-but two teams out of 30 using the manufacturers engine. Soon however, other engine developers caught up and the decline of the Cosworth name began in the 1980’s.

In their later years, the Ford-backed outfit would go on to supply engines to smaller teams Jordan, Sauber, Jaguar, Minardi and Stewart with both 3.0 V10 and V8 configurations.

We contacted Cosworth regarding the information we had received, but their spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. It is expected that an announcement for their participation as an engine supplier next year will take place later in 2014.
