McLaren Legend Calls Verstappen the Best Driver in Formula 1

Emerson Fittipaldi believes Max Verstappen is currently the best driver in Formula 1. The two-time world champion spoke highly of the Dutchman’s performance level, consistency and race intelligence. According to Fittipaldi, Verstappen’s mentality has made him almost unbeatable, even in difficult situations.

Verstappen delivered a remarkable drive in Brazil, charging from the pit lane to finish on the podium. The Red Bull driver’s recovery was one of the standout moments of the season and impressed fans, analysts and former champions alike. Fittipaldi says the Brazilian Grand Prix once again demonstrated why Verstappen is operating on a level few drivers can match.

The McLaren legend noted that Verstappen’s strength lies not just in raw speed, but in how he adapts to rapidly changing conditions and manages the car even when Red Bull is not performing at its best.

“He Is the Best Driver Right Now”

Speaking to VegasInsider, Fittipaldi was full of praise. “I think Max is the best driver in Formula 1 at the moment. If you look at what he did in Brazil, starting from the pit lane and still finishing on the podium, that says everything. Not many drivers could do that.”

According to the former McLaren and Lotus star, Verstappen combines aggression with precision. “He reads the race incredibly well. He knows exactly when to attack and when to save the tyres. That makes him so complete.”

Brazil Proved Verstappen’s Mentality

Fittipaldi highlighted Verstappen’s mindset as one of his greatest advantages. “Max never gives up. Even when he is not fighting for the win, he pushes to get every point. That determination is what champions are made of.”

The Brazilian legend added that Verstappen’s calmness was crucial during his recovery drive. “He stayed composed, even after the early setback. He overtook car after car without making mistakes. That is the sign of a top driver.”

McLaren’s Progress Also Praised

Fittipaldi also had positive words for McLaren, who he believes are now genuine title contenders. “Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are doing a fantastic job. McLaren has taken huge steps this year. The fight between McLaren and Red Bull is great for the sport.”

Still, he says Verstappen remains the benchmark. “Even with the improvements from McLaren, Max is the reference point. Everyone else has to reach his level.”

With the title fight entering its decisive phase, Fittipaldi expects Verstappen to stay in the mix until the final weekend. “If Red Bull gives him a car that is even close to competitive, he will always be there. That is why he is the best right now.”
