Mercedes, Hamilton nominated for Laureus Awards

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton have both been nominated for a Laureus World Sports Awards on February 19th 2019. Lewis Hamilton won his fifth F1 world drivers' title last year, while Mercedes saw off Ferrari in the constructors' fight.

In 2018, Mercedes won the Laureus World Team of the Year for the first time, becoming the third F1 team to do so after Renault in 2006 and Brawn GP in 2010.

Hamilton has not yet won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, however Michael Schumacher is two-time time winner (2002, 2004) and current rival Sebastian Vettel picked up the prize in 2014 after winning his fourth drivers' championship.

Mercedes will go up against the Europan Ryder Cup team, the French men's football squad, the Golden State Warriors, Norway's Winter Olympic team, and Real Madrid for the team prize.

Meanwhile, Hamilton faces competition from Novak Djokovic, LeBron James, Eliud Kipchoge, Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric. Tennis player Roger Federer won the award in 2018. This years' ceremony will once again take place in Monaco.
