Coulthard: Williams must discover pain in failure

Former Grand Prix driver David Coulthard believes that Williams must find pain in failure if it is to recover from its current slump. The Grove squad has had a disastrous opening to the 2018 season, picking up points on just one occasion, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The four points it collected in Baku hasn't been enough to be anywhere but the final place in the standings. The car has proven to be particularly tricky to drive, leaving the team fighting far away from the points weekend to weekend.

And Coulthard wants the team that handed him his race debut to rediscover its passion while it's at a low, and use that to make progress: "Williams I’m a little bit concerned for. I just don’t see the pain of failure that maybe we saw in the past.

"You can fool people about how you’re feeling, but you can’t fake passion," he added. "I’d love to see that passion come back to Williams. The paddock has a great deal of affection for Williams and what they’ve achieved," he added. "But of course things move on and that will dwindle over time. I hope they can turn it around.”

The seasons a write-off and with the loss of sponsor money and driver money, which isn't insubstantial I really worry for the team. I worry that funding is so short their theory on wrong design direction is right? Have they the finding to test their ideas fully to gain the confidence required to make the next change the right change? Can Williams make it through to the design re-start - this looks a saviour for them as a restart allows a abetter chance of getting it bang on - a-la Brawn - rather than wholly wrong. Come on Williams !!!

  • Williams refuses to make changes where it matters. We all know that Claire needs to go. She's a lovely lady, but has been disastrous as a manager. It's unfortunate. Surely it's not all down to her. But under the circumstances she should fall on her sword for the good of the company.
