Alonso claims fans were too far away in Montreal

Fernando Alonso made a memorable mark on North America two weeks ago when he contested in the Indy 500. The Spaniard impressed heavily during the 500-mile race, despite ending the day in retirement. He went on to win Rookie of the Year, a prize that saw him scoop over $300,000.

During Sunday's Grand Prix in Canada, Alonso was two laps from the end before his engine gave way. Even more disappointingly, he was running in tenth place and on course for McLaren's first point of the season. After clambering out of his car, Alonso went up into the stands to join the fans.

"The support in Canada is great and I wanted to give something back to the fans," he said after the race. "I actually was planning to throw my gloves into the crowd, but they were too far away, so I decided just to climb over the fence and go into the stand. "

"Of course I'm frustrated and sad, but it's not just the lost point for the championship. I think it's very disappointing for all the guys in the team that are working so hard day and night to make the car better."
