Taffin: "Consistency key to Monaco sucess"

Renault engine boss Remi Taffin says that success at Monaco comes from consistency. Formula 1 will travel to the jewel in the calendar next weekend, and plenty of drivers will be looking to impress around Formula 1's most challenging circuit.

While engine power may not be as important around the streets of Monte-Carlo than it is at other tracks, Taffin says that a consistent flow of power delivery is key for a successful race.

"For Monaco you need consistency, so the job of the power unit is to give the driver a consistent power delivery without too many energy recovery strategies over the course of a very busy and frenetic lap," says Taffin.

"Fortunately, Monaco is unique in the way it is driven and some of the areas you need to pay attention to for a more normal track are not so relevant. As a driver doesn’t use full throttle as much as at other tracks, they can recover energy quite easily."

Renault has had mixed results so far this year, with Nico Hulkenberg taking home points in the last three rounds. However, Jolyon Palmer is struggling to get up to speed in his R.S 17. Taffin stated that the team expected the start of the season to be tough.

"We knew it would be a challenging start to the year – testing illustrated this – but five Grands Prix in we have finished all the races without experiencing any problems," he continued.

"In Spain we were able to get more from the power unit in qualifying mode. We are not subject to the same constraints as before with tokens, so we can push and develop in a different way than for the past three seasons. We are continuing with our road-map of adding performance, balanced to the requirements of reliability."
