Daniel Ricciardo's miserable qualifying at Albert Park on Saturday has resulted in the Australian being given a five-place grid penalty by the race stewards.
Ricciardo was pushing on his first run in Q3 and had hopes of a strong performance at his home race. After spinning through the gravel and into the barriers at turn 14 he was unable to set a time during Q3 and so qualified tenth.
The resulting damage meant that his Red Bull team had to change his gearbox and so he was subsequently dropped to 15th on the grid by the stewards.
"It's not perfect but it's how it is," he said. "It's more motivation to come through the field and hopefully I can give the fans some overtaking specialities.
"In this race typically, you always have a few incidents and not everyone finishes. There are quite a few unknowns so I'll be smart but obviously go for them."
