Max Verstappen's three letter abbreviation will change this year from 'VES' to VER', the Dutchman has confirmed.

Verstappen made his race weekend debut at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, getting an outing for Toro Rosso in practice one as he was confirmed as a driver for the following season.

The timing screen listed him as 'VES' due to Jean-Eric Vergne who was racing for Toro Rosso at the time. When Vergne left the team at the end of the season, he moved to a test role at Ferrrari, keeping his abbreviation.

However, the Frenchman has now parted ways with the Italian outfit, allowing Verstappen to take the three lettered code.

"I wanted it from the beginning, but because Vergne was a test driver they [the FIA] didn't give it to me," Verstappen explained to GPUpdate.net.

"When Vergne left Ferrari, I said that I wanted VER, the first three letters of my name, like my dad used to have as well, and it has been approved – it's already on our timing screens."
