Sauber tech chief impressed by team atmosphere

Sauber will head into the 2017 F1 season with a new car and a tweaked driver line-up, with Pascal Wehrlein arriving to partner Marcus Ericsson after a year at Manor. They will also arrive in Melbourne having welcomed many new employees, including Technical Director Jorg Zander.

Zander last worked for the team from 2006 to 2007, and his return to Hinwil has so far impressed him, according to Sauber's official website.

"First of all, the impressions are positive. I have received a warm welcome and felt comfortable early on in a well-known environment. I am pleased with the attitude of my team," he said.

"After the frustrations and fears of the recent turbulence, everyone is now much more motivated. There are obviously expectations; the team wants change, stability and direction and that is what we strive to achieve together."

The turbulence to which Zander refers has come through much financial uncertainty in recent years. A lack of money led to stalled car development, and Sauber found themselves behind Manor for much of 2016, until Felipe Nasr finally scored points in Brazil - lifting them above their rivals into 10th place in the Constructors' Championship.

This result came after a mid-season takeover by Longbow Finance, whose investment allowed upgrades to restart and the team's form to improve. It also seems to have increased unity among their staff, something Zander is keen to maintain.

"I also want to play a part in contributing to our team with everyone sticking together even more to support, exchange ideas and understand each other. Formula One is a team sport!"

  • What happens to Sauber's Banco do Brasil sponsorship this year now that Nasr is gone? Will Sauber retain them, or will we see a Sauber with a different livery.

    • I thought Banco ended their sponsorship with the team at the end of the season which was why Nasr didn't get retained?

    • Could be. Either way they are probably not sticking around if Nasr isnt there. I wonder what livery they will have.
