Force India not "punching above our weight"

Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley insists that his team isn't punching above its weight as it looks to secure fourth place in the constructors' championship.

The Silverstone based team sits one point ahead of former-champions Williams and has more than double the points of powerhouse McLaren, who have enjoyed something of a resurgent season after their poor showing last year.

Despite being ahead of two of Formula One's major players, Fernley is adamant that the team should see themselves as capable of achieving such a result.

"No, I don’t think we are actually, and I don’t think we’re punching above our weight," he told GPUpdate.net. "I think we’ve consistently shown over the years a progression in terms of performance, and that’s not by accident. It’s about investment and clearly the people – our team is very dedicated and very talented."

"You don’t need to be throwing money at it to have results, and that’s clearly proven," he insisted. "On the other hand, you still need to have a sizeable budget to be able to maintain that development process. I think as a whole Formula One overspends anyway, and we don’t need to spend the amount of money, even what we’re spending, to put on a good show."

However, he did remark that fourth place, a record high finishing position for Force India, "would be like winning the series".
