Sergio Perez still keen to secure top team move

Sergio Perez has reiterated his desire to move to one of Formula One's top teams.

The Mexican is contracted to Force India for next year but he is thought to be in talks with a number of teams over a move from the Silverstone-based team.

The former-Sauber man has his eyes set on a world title-tilt in the next few years and insists he has to move up the field to do that.

"At the moment I am very far off [being world champion]," he told Sky Sports.

"I need to move up the grid, I need to move up closer to that," he said. "If we manage to secure fourth in the Constructors’ Championship then that means I am three places away from having that chance to fight for the world title."

One way for him to do that is to return to Ferrari. Perez became a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy shortly after signing for Sauber, and although he left the initiative for an unsuccessful year at McLaren, Perez wants to have a chance at the Italian team.

"Obviously Ferrari is the biggest team in Formula One, it is a dream for every driver," he said. "I just hope that if the opportunity comes it comes at the right time at the right moment. It is so important for a racing career that the opportunity comes at the right time and the right moment."

Perez's previous chance with a bit team was with McLaren in 2013. He joined in place of Lewis Hamilton but his tenure with the team coincided with their downturn in form.

They didn't win a race that year, and haven't since, and Perez feels he never truly got a chance to fulfil his potential.

"It was extremely tough my period with McLaren, especially what happened at the end," Perez said. "I was expecting to be part of McLaren for a couple of years, to grow with the team, but that didn’t happen. I didn’t have the opportunity to show my full potential with the team. We didn’t have a competitive car, but not only that we didn’t have a consistent car."

"When I look back it is just great that I was able to survive that hit."
