Kevin Magnussen aiming to stay at Renault

Kevin Magnussen is looking to stay at Renault next year, although he admits not discussions with the team have taken place.

Both Magnussen and team mate Jolyon Palmer are currently signed to one year deals with Renault, with the team refusing to comment on current driver speculation.

But Magnussen hopes to stay with the team, and agreed with the team's decision to abandoned development of their current car as they look to the future.

"Yes, because we can't win with this car," Magnussen said of the decision. "I am hoping I will stay with the team, so I want us to focus on the future."

"I expect to be here," he told Danish newspaper BT. "I have told that team that I want to continue and I have not seen or heard anything that indicates I won't be here. But I also sense that the team is in no hurry to decide its drivers for next year."

Despite wanting to stay with Renault next season, Magnussen has revealed that he is in discussions with other teams in case Renault does not opt to retain him.

"I'm not only talking with Renault," he admitted. "I know enough people in the paddock now to hear about what's going on, but right now I don't feel the need to talk too much with the other teams about 2017."

The main name linked with Renault for 2017 is current test driver and Mercedes junior Esteban Ocon.

Former European Formula Three and current GP3 champion Ocon is expected to take the place of Jolyon Palmer at the Anglo-French team, and Magnussen believes that the Frenchman deserves a crack at F1.

"Esteban is a really good driver, there's no doubt," Magnussen told Ekstra Bladet newspaper. "It wouldn't be good for motor sport in general if a driver like him didn't get a chance in Formula One."
