Verstappen Reflects on Surprise Career Switch: “Maybe I Would Have Chosen MotoGP”

Max Verstappen has revealed that his life might have taken a very different direction if he had not pursued Formula 1. The Dutchman says motorsport has always been central to his identity and that, had single-seaters not worked out, he may have ended up chasing a career on two wheels instead.

The three-time world champion has spoken before about his childhood fascination with motorbikes. Long before he became known for his aggressive racecraft and precision in an F1 cockpit, Verstappen spent large parts of his youth around motocross tracks and paddocks. That passion, he says, never fully disappeared.

With his dominance in Formula 1 well established, Verstappen was asked whether he could imagine himself in a completely different racing category. His answer was surprisingly open.

“I Always Loved Bikes”

In a recent interview, Verstappen explained where the idea comes from. “If I had not gone into Formula 1, maybe I would have chosen MotoGP. I always loved bikes. That was a big part of my childhood.”

He clarified that he would never attempt such a switch now, calling modern MotoGP “far too dangerous”, but the interest remains. “Those guys are crazy. I respect them a lot. What they do on a bike is unbelievable.”

A Parallel Life on Two Wheels

Verstappen says his early love for motorbikes was powerful enough that, in another life, he may have pursued it seriously. “There was a time when I was riding bikes a lot. It gives a completely different feeling compared to cars. If things had gone differently for me, who knows?”

Still, he acknowledges that his father Jos steered him firmly toward karting at a young age. “My dad did not want me anywhere near MotoGP. He said it was too dangerous and that karting was the right way to learn racing properly. Looking back, he was right.”

No Switch in the Future

Despite his fascination, Verstappen made it clear that a future switch is not on the cards. “I will never race MotoGP. I enjoy watching it, but the risk is huge. I have a lot of respect for those riders, but I know my limits.”

Instead, he expects his post-Formula 1 interests to remain closer to the world of cars. Verstappen has repeatedly expressed interest in endurance racing and GT machinery, which offer him the thrill of competition without the extreme physical risk of two-wheel racing.

For fans, the idea of Verstappen on a MotoGP bike is a curious “what if”. But the Dutchman says he is exactly where he belongs. “I love Formula 1. This is my world. But yes, sometimes I think about how different things could have been.”
