According to James Hinchcliffe, Ollie Bearman is one of the biggest revelations of the season. The IndyCar analyst and former driver says he’s been blown away by how the young Brit has developed at Haas this year, showing maturity and pace well beyond his age.
A rough start, a brilliant comeback
Bearman’s Mexican Grand Prix weekend began in disaster. His Haas had to be written off after the first practice session, and he languished in 17th place through the rest of the sessions. But qualifying told a completely different story: Bearman found his rhythm, improved lap after lap, and stormed into Q3 — clocking times within tenths of proven stars like Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

“What he showed in Mexico was remarkable,” said Hinchcliffe. “He drives like he’s been in Formula 1 for years. That composure, that understanding, that speed — you just don’t see that often from a rookie.”
Ice-cold under pressure
Bearman’s race performance was even more impressive. While Verstappen and Hamilton clashed just ahead of him, the young Brit remained completely unfazed. He overtook George Russell, went wheel-to-wheel with Verstappen, and even came out on top through Turn 7 — a moment that underlined his confidence and car control.
From that point on, Bearman faced relentless pressure: first from Verstappen, then from Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Russell, and finally from reigning world champion Oscar Piastri. Yet he never flinched. No mistakes, no panic. He drove with the calm, control, and consistency of a seasoned pro — qualities Hinchcliffe calls “exceptional for a first-year driver.”
The numbers speak for themselves
Bearman has outqualified his vastly experienced teammate Esteban Ocon in 12 of 20 sessions this season. On Sundays, he’s proven equally formidable: when qualifying doesn’t go his way, he makes up more positions during the race than almost anyone else on the grid — even more than the Red Bull and McLaren frontrunners.
His string of eleventh-place finishes midseason might look modest on paper, but Hinchcliffe says it revealed something crucial. “You could see the speed, the racecraft, the awareness — that’s what top teams look for in a young driver who can lead a team in the future.”
A future in Ferrari red?
Bearman’s long-term deal with Haas gives him stability, but the paddock is already buzzing about what comes next. A graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the Brit impressed the world when he made his Ferrari debut last year, filling in at short notice and finishing an incredible seventh.
And let’s be honest — if Lewis Hamilton decides to hang up his helmet in the coming years, Bearman seems like the natural successor. He has the temperament, the raw pace, and the race intelligence to take over that coveted Ferrari seat.
Whatever the future holds, one thing is certain: Ollie Bearman is no one-season wonder. The young Brit has evolved into a complete Grand Prix driver — and the rest of the Formula 1 grid should take notice.
