Renault aim to "fully match" customer teams by 2019

Renault has announced its intention to "fully match" McLaren and Red Bull by 2019. Last season, the French team finished sixth in the manufacturers' championship, making improvements on its return year in 2016.

Cyril Abiteboul, who is the Renault F1 boss had his say regarding this issue and told Autosport: "We know we have a substantial deficit to Red Bull in terms of chassis – in terms of aerodynamics and mechanical platform.  We know Red Bull very well and that's a fantastic benchmark. I think they have one of the best chassis if not the best chassis out there right now – we'll see what they come up with.

"McLaren is a bit more of an unknown for us, because they had a different chassis and a different engine, different drivers, so it's very difficult to compare. It will be an interesting benchmark.  I think in terms of overall capacities, in the course of this year we should be able to match them."

Renault made its comeback as a manufacturer in 2016. Throughout its presence as a manufacturer in Formula 1, they won the constructors' championship twice (2005 & 2006) and produced Fernando Alonso with two title wins.

  • I mean they matched Toro Rosso last year, and as the works team they really should match them. But Renault has shown their hand last year on their means to match their rivals... You know, your rivals cant be better than you if they dont have as many spares as you do.

  • If not, it would be a shame.

  • I fully expect Renault to fight for championships again. They are playing the long game. They have increased their investment. They have set reasonable but challenging goals every year. They have vastly improved their driver lineup with Sainz. I am frankly expecting them to fight for the occasional podium this year.

I just can't see it. Sainz seems to make mistakes or over--driving the car. Also I like nico but he hasn't set records in great performances yet.
