Perez admits disappointment over no 2017 podium

Sergio Perez says that no podium finish during the 2017 season takes something away from his achievements throughout the year. It marked the first year since 2013 that the 27-year-old failed to finish within the top three at some point during the season.

Force India wrapped up fourth place in the constructor's standings for the second year in a row, and Perez ended the season in seventh place - the same as 2016. Despite scoring points at all but three races, Perez admits that no podium takes away some shine from his results.

"Well if you look back at last year, last year was a really good strong year for me," said Pérez. "Not having the podium probably takes away something of the achievement this year. But at the end of the day I feel I did my job, I brought home a lot of points, we had some up and downs. I don't think it's my best year with the team."

Despite failing to claim a podium finish, Perez says that he came close at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Mexican ultimately retired from that race after a controversial crash with teammate Esteban Ocon.

"Definitely Baku," he reflected when asked what race he was closest to a podium finish. "I think Baku I had the podium there, and with so many safety cars I got unlucky, then [there was] the incident with Esteban. That weekend was the one that was the closest definitely, if we didn't have the safety car, or if we didn't have the contact, I would have had the podium there."
