Raikkonen claims Ferrari contract situation is "no different" than previous years

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen says that the situation surrounding his contract is no different than previous years. The Finn rejoined the Scuderia in 2014 and has been on a rolling contract since the end of 2015. Raikkonen's future is still not confirmed, however it is expected that he will be retained for 2018.

Drivers such as Sergio Perez and Romain Grosjean have been linked to the seat, but it is thought that leading driver Sebastian Vettel favours Raikkonen for the team. The 207 world champion is relaxed about his future, stating it is no different from the years gone by: "It’s no different than any year. It’s not really my decision," Raikkonen said. "The team knows what is my preferred option, and then we’ll see what happens."

Raikkonen's teammate Sebastian Vettel is also out of contract at the end of the year. While it is heavily expected that he will continue with the Maranello outfit, the terms of the contract are yet to be established as recent reports suggest the German is only interested in a one-year extension.

Ferrari would be bonkers to break up their driver team, it is clearly working and they all seem to be getting on well, both on and off the track - no histrionics here which is more than can be said of the Merc lot.

  • I think they need to look to the future, but SV wants him as team mate so let's see....

  • While Raikkonen is a clear #2 driver, it has to be said that he is a good one. He rarely challenges Sebastian. He doesn't complain. He doesn't have the passion to disobey team order to get a win or an extra point. He's a perfect Ferrari #2 driver.

Maybe, but he's not delivering in the same way that Bottas is as Mercedes No.2..... It is not often that you see him on the podium or directly behind the No 1 driver. I think there are better drivers who may be willing to take a number two slot if that is what is required to get the seat... Ferrari will need a better driver if they are to win the constructors championship against the Mercedes pairing...
