'Vettel only wants one-year Ferrari deal'

New reports suggest that Sebastian Vettel's future may not be as clear cut as originally seemed. Recently, Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne said that a new deal for Vettel was close, with an announcement expected at the Italian Grand Prix, with Kimi Raikkonen also being retained for 2018.

It was also suggested that Vettel was to be held down on a three-year deal, one that would see him remain with the team until the end of 2020. However, that may not be the current situation as Vettel reportedly wants a one-year deal to keep his options open for 2019.

"It's true that I haven't got a contract yet," Vettel admitted, "but I think the primary objective at the moment is not worrying about papers but making sure we get good results. I'm not in a rush, I don't think the team (Ferrari) is in a rush, and as far as I understand I think I have a good contact with the team and they would tell me otherwise. So as I've said there's no problem -- nothing wrong."

Lewis Hamilton's deal with Mercedes expires at the end of the 2018 season and the future of the Brit is unknown, despite team boss Toto Wolff declaring that the team is hoping to sign him up on another contract soon. It has been stated many times that a Ferrari/Mercedes switch for Vettel and Hamilton could be possible.

  • Makes sense really in Vettel's view, but that will make Ferrari tense.. They will have the same situation next year if Kimi is retained, 2 drivers out of contract at the end of the season

    • Yeah, hardly a nice position to be in as a top team.

Well that´s rather interesting and perfectly fitting to my theory that Ferrari wants to destabilize the market with their delay in contract renewals..
