Button to start Monaco GP from the pitlane

Jenson Button will start the Monaco Grand Prix from the pitlane due to some set-up changes McLaren made overnight. Button, who returns on a once off, managed to qualify P9 in yesterday's session but already knew a 15 place grid penalty would demote him to the back.

Today marks the second time Button has started from the back of the grid at Monaco, as previously did all the way back in 2003. The 2009 champion has stated throughout the weekend that he believes this race will be his last.

He competes in place of Fernando Alonso who will make his Indy 500 debut later today.  A brief statement from McLaren said: "We've changed the set-up on JB's car, which means he'll be starting from the pit lane this afternoon."

Button, who will start race number 306 today, spoke yesterday about how he thinks Formula 1 is moving in the right direction: "Formula 1 has definitely moved in the right direction with the regulations. I think it's very exciting for the team also to find big chunks of speed, lap time and downforce, which I think is the way Formula 1 should be."

  • At least now he'll stay out of any first lap trouble

    • That is actually a positive. Knowing Monaco, the first laps tend to be about as peaceful as the dreams of H.P. Lovecraft.
