Mercedes' day finishes early

German Formula 1 team, Mercedes AMG have had to cut their first day of testing short after Lewis Hamilton crashed the brand new W05.

The incident occurred just before 12pm, when Hamilton suffered a front-wing failure that sent him careering into the barriers at Turn 1. The Briton escaped unharmed but was understandably frustrated.

It is understood by F1Today.net that a new wing is being manufactured in the Brackley factory and will be transported overnight to the Jerez circuit so that Nico Rosberg can take-over driving duties.

Mercedes had launched their new car just four hours before the crash, with both Rosberg and Hamilton being present, as well as various executive members from the team. It was described as being one of the 'better looking' cars of 2014.

Prior to the incident, Hamilton had been leading the timesheets with a 1:27.820, over a second clear of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari F14 T.
