It has been revealed that Davide Valsecchi, reserve driver for Lotus in 2013 has not been paid by the team.
The news comes as no surprise as the Enstone-based team had been struggling for finances throughout the year and reportedly failed to pay their No. 1 driver, Kimi Raikkonen who has since returned to Ferrari after a five year absence.
The reigning GP2 champion was left with a bitter taste in his mouth after Heikki Kovalainen was chosen over Valsecchi to replace Raikkonen for the last two races of the year, following complications with his back. He admitted that he is likely to seek other options for 2014.
"After a 2013 season in which I travelled a lot but did not get on the track, I want to go back to wearing overalls and a helmet. I thought that, in their choice, my willpower would prevail over a driver like the Finn, who is at the end of his career."
Pastor Maldonado will take the seat that has been vacated by Raikkonen, partnering Romain Grosjean for the season. It is thought that Maldonado will bring some much needed sponsorship and funds to the struggling outfit.
