The Spaniard had been trading positions at the top of the timing sheets for the majority of the morning, but he didn't put his Ferrari F138 around the track fast enough for the top spot.
In the afternoon there weren't many improvements in times during the afternoon session because the majority of teams decided to run high fuel or on harder compound tyres.
Third placed Jenson Button was almost a second behind Alonso, with Nico Hülkenberg in 4th place.
With Räikkönen missing a day of testing yesterday due to an illness, the Finn's day wasn't as good today. His gearbox broke after just one lap, but Lotus got this issue sorted and he completed 50 laps in total.
7th and 8th fastest was Maldonado and Vettel, followed by Bottas, who completed the least amount of laps, was 9th.
Williams' development of the rear aerodynamic package on the FW35 continued today, and Ferrari ran their new exhaust system.
Pic, Bianchi, Ricciardo and Chilton filled out the bottom of the timing sheet.
