Wehrlein set for Bahrain return

After missing the opening two rounds of the 2017 Formula 1 season, Wehrlein is ready to get back into the action in Bahrain, according to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

In January, Wehrlein was involved in a hefty collision which left him with an injury. He arrived in Melbourne ready to race but ruled himself out, claiming he wasn't fit enough to compete.

There have been suggestions that Wehrlein simply doesn't have great motivation, and that there is a political dispute over a Mercedes junior driver racing in a team with engines supplied by Ferrari. However, all suggestions were shot down by Wolff.

"Pascal is training and doing weights, preparing himself as much as possible for Bahrain," Wolff, the head of Mercedes' development programme, told DPA news agency.

"I am only hearing good things about it -- that he is feeling better and stronger. At the moment, everything is pointing at him sitting in the car in Bahrain."

Wehrlein was replaced in Australia and China by Antonio Giovinazzi, who impressed in his first outing, but drew pursed lips from fans after he crashed in both qualifying and the race in Shanghai.
