Hamilton: "It was incredible"

Lewis Hamilton claimed victory for the first time this year in the Chinese Grand Prix and is relishing the possibility of a season-long battle with Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.

Asked by podium interviewer Martin Brundle how he felt in the mixed conditions at the start, Hamilton explained just how difficult the conditions were.

"It was incredible. Today was very, very tough for us all and it was difficult to know, I went out on the Inters initially on the laps to the grid then I tried the slicks which was impossible and we all started on Inters and it was very hard because there were dry patches everywhere,"

"Trying to keep the car on the track and look after the tyres at the same time was definitely very tough but a great job done by Sebastian and this young dude here [Max Verstappen".

Teenage sensation Max Verstappen put in another stellar performance and claimed driver of the day but Hamilton referred to its lack of importance in comparison to taking victory.

"I don't mind being on the top step,"

Hamilton thanked his team for their efforts as the Silver Arrows responded to the strong early form showed by their counterparts from Maranello.

We look set for a close fight for the world championship between Hamilton and Vettel, with the stage being set for a drawn-out scrap looking likely as the two trade blows.

"Lastly I want to say a big thanks to this team. I am so tremendously proud of everyone on my own personal team but also my team who work so hard back at the factory to make this possible and this race {with Vettel} is so real. It's so exciting for me personally."

"We were matching times and I think if there wasn't safety cars and stuff I think it would have been a lot closer".
