Alonso was never a Mercedes option - Briatore

Fernando Alonso was never a real option for Mercedes in 2017, according to former Renault boss Flavio Briatore.

Nico Rosberg shocked the Silver Arrows and the F1 world when he announced his retirement days after landing the 2016 world title, and following this, Alonso was widely tipped to be in the running for the vacant seat.

Briatore, who now acts as part of Alonso’s management team, has dismissed this as pure speculation.

"There were never any talks between Fernando and Mercedes. There were only baseless rumours.

“It was even said that Niki Lauda wanted to see Fernando’s contract and all the clauses, but the contracts are all there in Geneva,” he told Italy’s Sky Sport 24.

Mercedes eventually opted for another hot favourite – WilliamsValtteri Bottas – to partner Lewis Hamilton, signing him on a one-year deal for the coming season.

  • I imagine he was initially tempted but wants at least one more year at McLaren

  • I see someone decided to give Briatore laxatives again. Seriously, someone should ask him to look up his mouth diarrhea.

  • ROFLMAO pure bullshit coming from the dickhead who asked a driver to crash on purpose so that his golden boy Alonso could win a race.

Alonso had a watertight contract that would be very very costly for Mercede to break with Mclaren, that aside if Mclaren simply doesn't want to break the contract nothing Mercedes can do about it. It's all about the money.
