Martin Brundle: "Max's defensive technique is too junior-formula for my liking"

The defence techniques of Max Verstappen at the Hungaroring were met with mixed feelings. A lot of people enjoyed the way the Dutchman Kimi Raikkonen kept behind him, others thought that he should be punished for it.

The Finn himself was not very happy with the defence of Verstappen and he finds an ally in former driver Martin Brundle. The driver-turned broadcaster said in his column for Sky Sports Vestappen's driving was something akin to what you would see in a junior category.

"Max's defensive technique is too junior-formula for my liking," he wrote. "When he's defending, he tends to loiter in the middle of the track and then at the last moment move to the side of the track where his opponent attacks, and cut them off. It all looks a little too late - and it's asking for trouble."

"There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that he will end up with some punctures and race ending damage with this technique," he continued. "He was very lucky on Sunday that the contact with Raikkonen's Ferrari wasn't more grievous but this style will hurt him soon and it's clear the other drivers are becoming frustrated with it to the point that one of them will have him off to teach him a lesson".

"It's what a Mansell or a Senna used to do whenever they thought a young driver wasn't showing due respect," he said. "Max moves late, he moves fast and he moves frequently - we could argue all day whether he moved twice or even three times when he was defending against Kimi. He is rubbing up against the rules, damaging his own car and on the verge of coming to major grief with his peers."

  • More like moron driving, that's no skill that's just being a d*ckhead. Anyone can do that if they so wished but with FIA's selective choices when it comes to dishing out penalties this is a thing now. Had someone like Nico, Buttton done it penalty is instant. Heck Button got penalized for far less.

    • Nah, not really. Kimi didnt push him, Max drove there quite nicely himself. Enough to get a 2nd warning in fact.
