Italian press questions Ferrari performance

The Italian press has launched an attack on Ferrari, with one publication suggesting that the team is in 'crisis'.

La Repubblica made the claim in the wake of Red Bull's resurgence this season, which has seen them win a race for the first time since 2014 while Ferrari remain winless in 2016.

"The Ferrari crisis is deepening as even Red Bull now sails past,"said the newspaper. "Maranello's performance was as grey as the sky above Silverstone,"

La Gassetta dello sport questioned the many staff changes that have taken place at Ferrari in recent years, with engine boss Luca Marmorini, technical chief Pat Fry, tyre analyst Hirohide Hamashima, development driver Pedro de la Rosa and Chief Designer Nicholas Tombazis all leaving in the last two years.

"One wonders if hasty decisions such as the dismissal of the great aerodynamics expert Nicholas Tombazis were correct," questioned the popular daily paper.

"Vettel cannot do much with a slow car," added Corriere dello Sport.

Criticism of Ferrari isn't exclusive to the Italian pages, however.

A source 'close to' team principal Maurizio Arrivabene is quoted by The Times questioning Ferrari's decision to retain Kimi Raikkonen rather than opting to give a younger driver a chance.

"Yes, it is a shame none of the youngsters are getting a chance but we know why, don't we?" the source said. "Sebastian [Vettel] is the reason why."
