The roots of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) stretch back to 1984 and, since 1995, the team in Brixworth has been responsible for the design and development of every single Mercedes-Benz Formula One engine. Today, the company employs a wealth of talent tasked with the design, manufacture and testing of Formula One racing Hybrid Power Units for the works Silver Arrow team, Mercedes AMG Petronas, and partner teams.
Central to the success of the team has been the 500-strong group of hard-working, dedicated and talented individuals at Brixworth, which includes not only a wealth of experienced technical experts but also puts a strong emphasis on developing and training the future innovators of the automotive industry. With over 10% of head count comprising individuals sourced through its graduate and apprentice schemes - and an intake of 39 graduates, apprentices and interns in 2014 alone - Mercedes AMG HPP aims to play a key role in contributing to both the long-term legacy of British engineering excellence and Daimler's drive for global excellence.
Earlier this year, Mercedes AMG HPP was awarded the coveted Dewar Trophy - renowned as the most prestigious award in British automotive engineering - for its PU106A Hybrid Formula One Power Unit. As the first two-time recipient of the award - having also received the accolade in 2009 - the Brixworth-based team continues to build its reputation as a centre of innovation excellence.
Andy Cowell, Managing Director, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains: "It has been an honour to welcome HRH The Duke of Kent to Brixworth today. To have received such a visit is testament to the fantastic achievements of each and every team member - not only during this incredible season of Formula One but over the many preceding years also. At Mercedes AMG HPP we pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of technical innovation and showcasing this in the field of Formula One. We are also extremely proud that so many young and gifted engineers and craftsmen have worked their way up through the ranks within our organisation and have contributed to this year's successful PU106A Hybrid Power Unit - establishing themselves as the next generation of top-drawer experts within their field. It's extremely humbling to see that recognised here today and we are very grateful to His Royal Highness for sparing us the time to visit our facility."
