McLaren planning "aggressive" upgrades - Boullier

McLaren Mercedes are planning an "aggressive" development program to take place throughout 2014 after a lacklustre start to this years campaign.

After promising pace in pre-season testing, the Woking-based team looked to be the main rivals to Mercedes for the season and Round 1 in Australia would have supported these claims after drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button scored a double-podium.

However, their form in Bahrain dropped with both cars retiring and then a week later in China, the Brit and Dane failed to make it into the Top 10, dropping them to 5th in the Constructors Championship.

Newly appointed Racing Director, Eric Boullier in-line with this has said that the squad will have to improve their game to keep up with their competitors: "Everything is planned already. Spain will see an interesting upgrade for the car, [while] every race will see an upgrade package.

""The good thing is we have a very, very good rate of development in the wind tunnel, so then it is just up to us to manufacture the parts and bring them on track."

The Frenchman was optimistic about their results in 2014: "We have to believe we will win a race. 2014 should be a benchmark year for us. It should be seen as a year of rebuilding a winning team."

This follows news that ex-Team Principal, Martin Whitmarsh will have his contract bought out by the team after their disappointing 2013 campaign, where the British squad failed to score a podium.
