2014 cars to feature 'anteater' nose

It has been revealed that the majority of cars competing in the 2014 Formula 1 season will feature a new 'anteater' style nose. This is one of many technical changes starting in 2014, including a change to 1.6 litre V6 Turbocharged engines.

The new regulations state that the nose must be no higher than 185mm above the ground, compared to 550mm in 2013. The problem with this change concern aerodynamics, as the lower the nose, the more the airflow through the underside of the car is disrupted which causes a loss in downforce and unnecessary drag.

Designers are trying to adapt their cars by making the nose narrower than the monocoque itself, thus resulting in the 'anteater' effect and the new innovation has been met with mixed reviews from critics and fans.

In addition to the new nose, the front wing will also be narrowed from 1800mm to 1650mm which will hopefully allow for more aggressive overtaking.

The popularity of the 'anteater' nose will be revealed in due course, with McLaren being the first to unveil the MP4-29 on the 25th ahead of the first test at Jerez on the 28th.
