Formula 1 will launch its first ever eSports championship, allowing gamers to battle it out to become the fastest racing gamer in the world. The series will start in September, 2017 and will see virtual racers from around the world compete.
F1 has linked up with Codemasters, who produce the official Formula 1 game, and Gfinity for the project. Managing Director, Commercial Operations at Formula 1 Sean Bratches says that the deal is a very important move for fans.
"This launch presents an amazing opportunity for our business: strategically and in the way we engage fans. First, it's a growing category with tremendous fan engagement that we're entering in a big way; and we are
proud to have Codemasters and Gfinity joining us on this ride.
"Of course, as we do in Formula 1, we'll continue to evolve and innovate in the way we run this virtual counterpart to the F1 championship to ensure we provide the most exciting and enjoyable experience we can for our fans."
Using the F1 2017 game which will be released on August 25th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, the event will take place over three stages. Qualifications will be determined throughout September and the 40 quickest drivers will be chosen.
After that, the racers will go to the Gfinity Arena in London mid-October to compete in the semi-finals, where the fastest 20 will be determined. At the F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi, the final will take place and the Formula 1 eSports World Champion will be determined.
