Could Stroll be on his way to Force India?

Lance Stroll is the latest driver to enter the ring of silly season. The 18-year old is competing in his first season of Formula 1, racing for Williams who he joined in 2016 as a development driver. After a somewhat shaky start, the Canadian seems to be finding his feet in the sport and even defied all odds in Baku, claiming his maiden podium.

Stroll originally looked set for a 2018 drive at Williams, but it now appears that his future at the Grove outfit is not as clear cut as first seemed. Italiaracing is reporting that Stroll's father, Lawrence, is linking himself to Force India.

Force India will more than likely have a name change at the end of the season, as co-owners Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy are both tackling serious legal issues, and also to make the team more internationally appealing in an attempt to bring in more sponsors.

Mallya believes that an increased input of investment would allow the team to fight inside the top three on a consistent basis: "With a little bit more in our pocket we can make that incremental step and certainly fight in the top three consistently," he said.

Lawrence Stroll is one name being linked with a big sponsorship deal with the team, and with that could also bring his son to the team. CEO of F1 Chase Carey admits that seeing Stroll take a podium in Azerbaijan was one of his favourite moments of the year.

"In sport, it's a great story when an underdog suddenly has success," he told Auto Bild. "Stroll had to listen to all that criticism for months, and everything about his father's money as well, and then he did his reply on the track in Baku. I would like to see more of that."

If Stroll drove at Sauber, nobody would bat an eye. However, him driving for Williams or FI just seems wrong. I realise he made the podium at Baku, but I consider that a bit of a fluke. Although to be fair, he did great under immense pressure.

  • Stroll still has a lot to prove. Furthermore Force India? Why the hell would they let go of one of two great drivers who are still great value? Money I suppose, but Force India so far hasn't been infected by the pay driver fever, for which I respect them massively.
