Mixed thoughts after Vettel tests "shield"

There have been mixed feelings about the shield safety device fitted to Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari in FP1 on Friday.

The german only drove with the device for only one installation lap before ditching it to continue a normal Friday practice session. Vettel worrying complained of dizziness whilst testing the device which he said was his reason for not testing it for longer.

Vettel said when questioned: "We had a run planned but I didn't like it so we took it off, I got a bit dizzy. It's probably because of the curvature - you get quite a bit of distortion - plus you get quite a bit of downwash pushing the helmet forwards."

Curiously the device isn't supported by the GPDA, a usual advocate for any way to improve safety, but new director Romain Grosjean has been a vocal critic of the device. He said in response to the failed shield test: "Of course we want to improve security, but it is not up to us to find a solution,”

Not all of the drivers were quick to write the shield off though with Fernando Alonso wanting to give it more of a chance.

The spaniard said "We'll have a driver meeting now, talk about it and what the opinion of it is and whether it can be improved,”
