Kvyat frustrated after double penalty mishap

Daniil Kvyat endured a frustrating Canadian Grand Prix, retiring from the race with 15 laps to go. The Russian's race started with issues, as he stalled and the grid, and had to make haste to catch the cars ahead before the safety car line.

He failed to do just that and was handed a penalty. However, further into the race, the stewards deemed that the original penalty that had been thrown his away was not justified, and so they added a second one on top of that. After the races, he described the stewarding as a "stupid circus".

"A very disappointing day. Our problems already started during the formation lap – my engine stalled, so I had to catch all the cars before the Safety Car line, which I didn't manage to do so I got a penalty for it... But we were still going for P9 as the pace was mega good today!

"Unfortunately, during my pit-stop we had a problem and then we retired... It was too late to do anything after losing so much time in the pits anyway. I did everything I could do today but what's annoying is that every time we have very good pace something happens or goes wrong... It's very frustrating, we deserved a reward today."

Stewarding is a "stupid circus"

The first penalty the stewards handed him was a drive-through penalty, which he consequently took. However, after he had taken that penalty the stewards got on the radio to Toro Rosso and told them that it was supposed to be a 10 second stop/go penalty, which he also had to take.

"They have a job to do which is not so difficult in my opinion and they cannot do the job properly," said Kvyat. "They were clearly sleeping today in their office, so maybe they needed some coffee there. They should cancel this stupid rule. Who is this rule for? Are we taxi drivers here or Formula 1 drivers?

"I don't understand this. It's a circus, a stupid f***ing circus. I will go and talk to Charlie. It's annoying me, it's really annoying me. A simple job, and he can't even do that job properly. Maybe it's better to go in the back room because now the heat is up for me I will not want to say anything wrong to any of them and I'm not really sure it's Charlie.

"I want to understand first of all who does this job. All I know is our team manager was for 10 laps arguing with the FIA that we shouldn't get another additional penalty and they said 'no, sorry, we have this'."

  • It was a bit of a dum dum on the stewards' behalf. Then again, Kvyat could've avoided a penalty completely, had he done what he was supposed to do. Fortunately we dont see these kind of problems very often.

  • I think he's frustrated because he knows it's his last year in Formula 1...
