Raikkonen plays down wheelbase advantage

Kimi Raikkonen has played down the prospects of Ferrari having a pace advantage over the field due to their shorter wheelbase. It was suggested that Mercedes will struggle with their longer wheelbase around the narrow streets of Monaco.

However, Raikkonen pointed out that both teams have had the same wheelbase at every race up to now, and doesn't think that they will be any different in comparison to Mercedes than they have been in the first five races of the season.

"We have the same wheelbase at every circuit, so hopefully the car behaves in the same way as it does everywhere else. You need more than just a short wheelbase at Monaco," the Finn is quoted by Speed Week.

Team chairman of Mercedes Niki Lauda told Osterreich newspaper: "We designed our car for 20 tracks, but we will find out more after practice." He also told Kronen Zeitung: "Our car has the longest wheelbase and this can be a disadvantage here, but not necessarily."

Mercedes have a strong record around the streets of Monte Carlo, winning the last four races here, three times with Nico Rosberg and once with Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari meanwhile is looking to end their Monaco drought, as the last time they won around Monaco was all the way back in 2001 with Michael Schumacher behind the wheel.
