With the introduction of radically more aerodynamics and downforce, the new tyres for this year are a little overshadowed. The tyres, which are 25% wider, will play a key role this year in the new speeds of the cars.

In Barcelona testing, Kimi Raikkonen set a 1:18.634, a time only a few tenths away from the fastest lap set in 2008 by Felipe Massa. Pirelli F1 manager Mario Isola looks back on the past two weeks in Barcelona.

"During the eight days of testing we have achieved almost all the goals that we had set ourselves," said Isola. "This week was a confirmation of the results of the first test week, and then in particular with regard to the rapid recovery of the tyres when they become overheated. This was a wish of the drivers for the tyres for the upcoming season."

Isola indicates that the target was to be five seconds faster than the times in 2015 in Barcelona. He continued "The goals we achieved in the first week and that benchmark was eventually made even sharper."

The fastest times were set on tyres that are not even ideal for the circuit in Barcelona, according to Isola . Therefore, he expects that cars will develop further during the season. He concludes: "It is an indication of the phenomenal potential of the cars, the new generation of Formula 1 cars are the fastest sports has ever seen."
