Nico Rosberg's replacement at Mercedes won't be unveiled until January.
It is understood that management at the team are unwilling to name their second driver until after the team returns to work on January 3.
It is believed that Valtteri Bottas and Pascal Wehrlein are the front runners for the seat, which became available after Rosberg made the shock decision to retire from Formula One less than a week after he won the championship.
Mercedes have reportedly offered Williams a £10 million reduction on their customer engine deal, as well as the services of Wehrlein in exchange for Bottas who is managed in part by Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff
